Blocked downpipe and stormwater drain clearing in Burwood

September 30, 2026

A customer in Burwood contacted Doherty Plumbing Solutions about a completely blocked downpipe that was causing problems around the property. Our plumber in Burwood, George, attended the site and cleared it.

Once the downpipe was free, George ran the drain machine through the stormwater line to clear out tree roots and make sure the drain was ready to handle the winter rainfall.

For similar problems, our blocked drain service and roof plumbing service cover downpipes, gutters and stormwater drainage across Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs.

Quick answer

What work was completed at this Burwood property?

George cleared a completely blocked downpipe at a Burwood home, then used a drain machine to clear tree roots from the connected stormwater line.

The downpipe was reconnected, the drainage was tested, and the work area was cleaned down before leaving. The stormwater system is now clear and ready for winter rain.

The problem

The customer had a downpipe that was completely blocked. Instead of carrying roof water away, the downpipe had packed solid and water was backing up at the base and spilling out across the surrounding paving.

A blockage like this does not stay a downpipe problem for long. Water that cannot get into the stormwater system has to go somewhere, and it usually ends up pooling against the house, running across paths and driveways, or soaking into garden beds near the foundations.

With winter rain on the way, it needed sorting before heavier downpours arrived.

What we found

George disconnected the downpipe at the base to get a proper look at what was causing the blockage.

The stormwater point was packed solid with silt, leaf litter and fine tree roots, compacted into a plug that water simply could not get past. The roots were the telling part.

Roots in a stormwater line mean the problem is not just surface debris washing down from the gutter, and clearing only the visible blockage would have left the real cause in place.

How we cleared the blockage

George cleared the packed debris from the downpipe outlet first, then set up the drain machine to work through the stormwater line itself.

The drain machine cuts through root intrusion and clears compacted material along the length of the pipe rather than just at the opening. That is the difference between a drain that runs today and one that keeps running through a wet winter.

With the line cleared, the downpipe was reconnected and the drainage tested to confirm water was flowing away properly.

Cleaning up after the work

Clearing a stormwater line is messy work. Roots, silt and debris come out of the pipe and end up across the surrounding area.

Once the drain was running clear, George cleaned down the work area before leaving – debris collected and removed, and the paving hosed off. The customer was left with a working stormwater drain and a tidy site, not a pile of muck to deal with themselves.

It is a small thing, but it matters. Leaving a property the way we found it is part of the job, not an extra.

The result

The downpipe and stormwater line were cleared, the tree roots were removed, and the drainage was tested and flowing freely.

The customer heads into winter with a stormwater system that can handle the rainfall, rather than one that backs up in the first heavy downpour.

Another good result from George and the Doherty Plumbing Solutions team.

What this Burwood job shows

A blocked downpipe is often the symptom rather than the cause. If water is backing up at the bottom of a downpipe, the blockage may be further along in the stormwater line, and tree roots are a common culprit in established suburbs with mature plantings.

Clearing the visible debris at the outlet can make the problem look solved while the root intrusion stays where it is. Running a drain machine through the line deals with the actual cause.

Timing helps too. A stormwater drain that is only partly blocked may cope with light rain and then fail in the first real downpour, which is why it is worth clearing before the wet months rather than during them.

Frequently asked questions

What causes a downpipe to block completely?

Downpipes commonly block with leaf litter, silt and debris washed down from the roof and gutters. Where the downpipe connects into an underground stormwater line, tree roots and compacted material can also build up and block the flow entirely.

Can tree roots get into a stormwater drain?

Yes. Tree roots can enter stormwater pipes through joints and small cracks, then continue growing inside the pipe. Over time they trap silt and debris and can block the line. This is common in established suburbs with mature trees.

What is a drain machine and why is it used?

A drain machine feeds a flexible cable with a cutting head through the drain to clear roots and compacted debris along the length of the pipe. It clears the blockage properly rather than only at the opening.

Why clear stormwater drains before winter?

A partly blocked drain may cope with light rain and then fail during heavy downpours. Clearing the line before the wet months reduces the risk of water backing up and pooling around the property when rainfall is heaviest.

Do you clear blocked stormwater drains in Burwood?
