Quick answer

What work was completed at this Burwood property?

Tim replaced a faulty rainwater tank pump at a Burwood home. The new pump was connected back to the rainwater tank and the garden tap it supplies, and a protective cover lid was installed over it. The pump sits outdoors against an external wall, so the cover helps shield it from sun and rain.

The problem

The property had a rainwater tank pump supplying an outdoor garden tap. The pump had become faulty and needed replacing.

The original pump was mounted on a concrete pad against the brick wall of the house, fully exposed to the weather. Outdoor pumps in this position deal with sun, rain and seasonal temperature swings year round, and that exposure takes a toll over time.

What we found

Tim inspected the existing pump and the pipework connecting it to the rainwater tank and garden tap. The old unit showed the wear you would expect from years of sitting out in the open, and the surrounding pipework and isolation valves needed to be worked around during the replacement.

Replacing the pump also gave an opportunity to improve how the new unit was protected once it was installed.

How we replaced the pump

Tim removed the faulty pump and installed a replacement in the same position on the concrete pad.

The new pump was connected back to the rainwater tank on the supply side and to the garden tap on the outlet side, so the existing outdoor water supply worked as it did before.

A cover lid was then fitted over the new pump. This shields the unit from direct sun and rain, which helps protect the motor and electrical connections and gives the new pump a better chance of a long service life in an exposed position.

The result

The garden tap supply was restored, and the customer was left with a working pump that is properly protected from the weather.

Another good result from Tim and the Doherty Plumbing Solutions team.

What this Burwood job shows

Rainwater tank pumps are easy to forget about until they stop working. They sit outside, often out of sight, and quietly do their job until the garden tap runs dry.

Protecting an outdoor pump makes a real difference to how long it lasts. A cover is a small addition that shields the motor and electrical connections from the weather.

Frequently asked questions

Why do rainwater tank pumps fail?

Pumps can fail for a range of reasons, including age, electrical faults, worn internal components or long-term exposure to the weather. A plumber can inspect the pump and the connected pipework to determine whether a repair or replacement is the better option.

Does a rainwater tank pump need a cover?

A cover is not always fitted, but it helps. Pumps installed outdoors are exposed to sun, rain and temperature changes. A cover lid shields the motor and electrical connections and can help extend the life of the pump.

Can a rainwater tank pump supply a garden tap?

Yes. A tank pump is commonly used to supply outdoor taps and garden watering from collected rainwater. If the pump fails, that outdoor supply usually stops working.

Do you replace rainwater tank pumps in Burwood?

Yes. Doherty Plumbing Solutions replaces rainwater tank pumps and carries out general plumbing work throughout Burwood and Melbourne’s Eastern Suburbs.
