Stormwater and Sewer Capping for Your Property

If you are about to demolish an existing building and are getting ready for a new build, you might already have a long list of things to do. Is stormwater and sewer capping one of the items in your checklist? If so, Doherty Plumbing Solutions can assist!

Why do you need assistance from an experienced and licensed plumber?

Be it a residential or a commercial property in Melbourne, planned redevelopment work requires sealing existing sewer and stormwater pipelines.

Using licensed plumbers, who are experienced in this process, ensures the capping work meets the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) regulations.

The plumber is required to obtain consent from your local water authority. A Compliance Certificate should also be issued on completion of works.

Doherty Plumbing Solutions have experienced, licensed plumbers who will adhere to the current VBA requirements, which will also give you peace of mind that your project is in safe hands.

Moreover, if a property has clay pipes connecting the sewer and stormwater systems, these may need to be realigned using modern PVC connections. A licensed plumber should be contacted to successfully carry out this work. Give Doherty Plumbing Solutions a call today!

Why is capping necessary in your property?

Capping a stormwater or sewer line at the property is essential to preserve them for future use, and to protect the connections from accidental damage during the rebuilding works.

If connections underneath the ground are capped securely, this will protect them from getting clogged with the debris at the construction site.

Once the demolition work is completed, it is easier to locate these underground pipelines for reconnection if they are properly capped and marked correctly.

Furthermore, it is an offence under the Utilities Act 2000 if debris, groundwater, stormwater or other unapproved liquid wastes are discharged into the sewerage networks. A demolition project could produce hazardous elements (e.g., asbestos, synthetic mineral fibres, etc.) that could find their way into the sewerage system. At a construction site with uncapped pipelines, this could become a cause of concern if not properly dealt with from the start of proceedings.

Most capping work is done to temporarily disconnect the pipework for the duration of the construction work. However, permanent disconnection may be required if the proposed construction work does not begin within a year from the date of demolition.
